To be admitted to Nature's hearth costs nothing. None is excluded, but excludes himself.
You have only to push aside the curtain - Henry David Thoreau

How to get to the top...

pole, pole (pronounced poley, poley)...Swahili for slowly, slowly...
Apparently, that's how it's done - well, that and some luck with acclimatization.

We're taking the longer Lemosho route starting from the Londorossi Gate.  If all goes according to plan, it should take us about 6-1/2 days to ascend and 1-1/2 days to descend - 98km in total.  The company providing our guides and porters describe the route as :

...unspoiled, remote, little-used, and beautiful way up to the Shira Plateau.  Above the plateau, you approach Kilimanjaro great western Breach, then follow the south circuit to reach the Barafu Route.  This is one of the few routes where an armed ranger accompanies our groups, since there are still animals in the forest around the Lemosho Glades.

Only 11 more sleeps.  Of course, there seems to be a ton of things that have to get done before we leave, but somehow we'll get it all finished.  For me, true excitement comes once the bags are checked in at the airport and we're sitting on the plane ready to go.  That's when I begin to relax and enjoy the adventure ahead.
