Shira Camp 2 to Barranco Camp

This is scheduled to be our 2nd longest day - 7+ hours of hiking. It is also going to be a good day for acclimatizing as we will hike up for 4 hrs to Lava Tower (15,230ft/4,642.m) which is about the same altitude as what our base camp will be before we attempt the summit in a couple of days. This will give us a good indication of how well we are handling the altitude.

Significantly colder at the Lava Tower and we could see a cold front coming through on our approach. Unfortunately, the fog covered up the view of the Lava Tower until we were heading back down towards our next camp, but what we saw was very cool (or 'poh-a' phonetic sound in Swahili).

The next part of the trek was my favourite so far. This is the high desert and the groundsel trees and lobelia are more abundant.

We took a lot of photos, but won't be able to upload them while on mountain as we are sending these updates from the blackberry (thank-you RIM!). Again, we're not sure how long we'll have a signal (it is a bit hit and miss so far) and we apologize for any spelling errors while typing on the small keybaord in frigid temperatures at night...but know we're hav ing fun!!

We are now at Barranco Camp and have enjoyed another sunset on the mountain. Very cool indeed.

Re Shira and Barranco Camps. Great write-ups and good to hear from you and that the hike is going so well. Poley Poley hakuna matatta, -in Swahili- slowly, slowly - no problems- is everyone's wish to you and your friends. I read climbers can stay 20 minutes at the summit. Good Luck have fun and keep happy. Mom.
