Karanga camp to Barafu camp

Barafu is base camp for the summit attempt. Barafu means 'ice', although there is none left there.

To get there we climb further out of the Karanga camp and hike through alpine desert. Very little is growing here and the mountainside is covered in big boulders of lava rock. It's hard to imagine the force of a volcano until one sees these large rocks that would have been thrown miles away.

We gain a fair amount of elevation as we make our final (very long) climb to base camp. As we got there, we saw some climbers heading back down. There is no way to know if their summit attempt was a success by the look on their face, because either way...they are tired and just want to rest.

Base camp above the clouds:

We have lunch, a very short nap, then dinner and summit briefing before heading off to our tents to get our gear ready and get whatever sleep we can before we are on our way close to midnight. Getting excited!

Best of luck and good wishes for the midnight stroll. An amazing adventure regardless of the outcome. Know that we're breathless just thinking about it.

At present I figure you are on the last leg of the climb. Sure hope you make it to the top and see the sign "Congratulations" If not, it was still a great experience and you are to be commended. A great feat accomplished. Love, Mom.
